Fusion operations in lumbar interbody fusion techniques

With some diseases of the lumbar spine, a fusion operation is unavoidable following unsuccessful
conservative therapy. Frequently, besides inserting screws, it is also necessary to remove the
degenerated intervertebral disc. In place of the disc, small titanium cages are implanted to stabilise
the intervertebral disc space and restore the disc to its proper height. Depending on the position
of the cages, we distinguish between anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), posterior lumbar
interbody fusion (PLIF), and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). This operating procedure
can be applied at several levels and serves e.g. for the correction of degenerative lumbar scoliosis.
